About Us

Let’s start with our name: Akísà

In Yoruba, “Akísà” refers to a piece of cloth or garment that may be considered worn or old, what some might call “rags.” But in true African fashion, even what is old can be made new again. In our community, an Akísà might be lovingly repurposed into something useful, stylish, or passed on to someone else who sees its worth. It speaks to a deeper philosophy: one person’s worn piece can hold immense value and meaning for another.

We chose this name intentionally. We believe that stories, like garments, shouldn’t be discarded easily. Akísà is a celebration of rebirth, resourcefulness, and the rich tradition of extending the life of what we wear. It is a reminder that fashion is more than fabric; it is history, heritage, and the heartbeat of our identity.

The What

Akisa is an online marketplace dedicated to giving Afrocentric pre-loved fashion items a second life. We connect sellers and buyers across the world and aim to extend the lifecycle of quality fashion items—making luxury more accessible while fostering environmental sustainability.

At Akisa, we value the craftsmanship and authenticity of bespoke tailoring and believe that African fashion has a place in the $177 billion resale fashion industry. Our entire ethos revolves around the philosophy that Africans deserve to outlive our fashion and highlight our heritage by promoting and supporting quality brands and designers.

The How

Akisa is an online resale marketplace that connects sellers of bespoke and high-end ready-to-wear pre-loved fashion items with buyers seeking quality, Afrocentric fashion pieces. The platform offers a curated selection of clothing, shoes, accessories, and handbags from renowned African-inspired designer brands. But what truly sets Akisa apart is its unique inventory—featuring everything from your favorite African fashion labels to one-of-a-kind, bespoke Aso Ebi garments that deserve to be worn again and again.

Sellers have the opportunity to list their items, set their own prices, and make money from their wardrobe sales. Buyers enjoy access to a wide range of distinctive, high-end fashion pieces at accessible prices—all while contributing to sustainability efforts on the African continent.

The Why

Beyond fashion, Akisa is a response to a deeper challenge—textile waste and the underrepresentation of African fashion in the global resale economy, a $177 Billion industry! Across the continent, garments worn only once for cultural events like aso ebi often go to waste. Our communities deserve better.

We are creating a circular solution rooted in cultural pride and conscious consumption. By reselling pre-loved garments, we’re not only extending the life cycle but also reshaping how we think about the ownership, value, and legacy of African inspired fashion.

The Solutions We’re Building

Reducing Textile Waste
By giving garments a second life, we reduce overproduction and inspire more sustainable fashion habits in our communities.

Economic Empowerment
We provide income-generating opportunities for individuals—stylists, designers, and everyday fashion lovers—by helping them monetize their wardrobes and participate in the growing resale economy.

Cultural Celebration
Every piece on Akisa carries a story. From intricately embroidered bespoke gowns to bold handmade prints, we’re honoring and amplifying African heritage through fashion.

Access to Quality, Sustainably
We’re democratizing luxury, offering curated fashion that is both high-quality and ethical, with a focus on sustainability and cultural significance.
